Timothy S. Bailey, MD, FACE, FACP, CPI
Director

Dr. Bailey was born in New York City. Having lost an uncle from the ravages of type 1 diabetes while a teen, he became interested in medicine. At Mount Sinai he was mentored by Elliot Rayfield, MD, FACE and chose to train in Endocrinology & Metabolism with Harold Lebovitz, MD, FACE. In 1990 he moved to Escondido, California and began work at Advanced Metabolic Care + Research in Escondido, CA where he currently serves as its president.

In 1994, he founded MetaMedix Inc, a company that developed diabetes and nutrition management software. He developed a ISO9001-compliant quality system to support the first submission to the FDA for a web-based diabetes care system. He led the company to profitability and a successful acquisition by iMetrikus Inc. (a spinoff of Chiron Corporation) in August of 2000.

Dr. Bailey is the director of AMCR Institute and has served as principal investigator on phase 1 to 4 clinical trials. He has extensive experience in medical device trials, including first-in-human and pivotal trials. AMCR Institute also tests stand-alone and embedded medical software systems.

Dr. Bailey is a clinical associate professor of medicine at the University of California at San Diego, where he is active in the education of Endocrinology fellows. He has served since 2000 on the board of the California chapter of American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) and has served as treasurer, secretary, and webmaster. He was elected to the AACE national board of directors in 2010 and presently chairs the clinical research committee. He is a member of the American Diabetes Association, the Endocrine Society and the IEEE. He is a frequent speaker to both physician and patient groups.

Investigator

Dr. Varma started his practice of endocrinology in Escondido after completing his fellowship at Nassau County Medical Center in Long Island, New York where was also a Clinical Tutor at the State University of New York, Stonybrook. A native of India, he was inspired to go into medicine by his physician father who dedicated his life to caring for the less fortunate citizens of Madras, a sprawling city on the Bay of Bengal. He founded North County Endocrine (currently AMCR) in 1980.

Dr. Varma’s first passion is clinical endocrinology, the diagnosis and treatment of endocrine disorders. He is also active in clinical research at AMCR Institute, and teaches medical students and endocrinology fellows at the Veteran’s Hospital, La Jolla, in his UCSD faculty position of Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine.

Dr. Varma is board certified in endocrinology and metabolism, is a member of the Endocrine Society, the American Diabetes Association, and is a founding member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. Roya Jannesari, RN, BSN, MSN, FNP
Investigator

Roya has been a Nurse Practitioner in the field of Endocrinology since 1995. Her main focus has always been female Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). Currently she specializes in Bio-identical HRT. She truly believes that every peri-menopasual woman (at any stage of the menopause process she may be) needs to be assessed, listened to, and helped. No woman should go through menopause alone.

Roya’s endocrine background is also strong in areas of Diabetes care, Thyroid care, Metabolism, high cholesterol, unexplained weight gain, fatigue (including adrenal fatigue), and sudden hair loss.

She routinely, gives group- talks to women on HRT and Women’s Health and issues, educating them on new endeavors in Hormone Replacement Therapy, its benefits along with its ramifications. John Walsh, PA
Investigator

John Walsh has assisted people with diabetes and other endocrine challenges in problem solving medical conditions for 30 years. Throughout his career, a primary focus has been on hearing individual concerns and finding solutions that work, while emphasizing prevention and reversal of avoidable health problems. He addresses the risk factors of cholesterol, blood pressure, and heart disease by analyzing the A1c, CRP, Vit. D levels and more. Using a person’s glucose patterns, he adjusts pump and injection doses to provide better blood glucose levels.

John received his Physician Assistant training in general medicine at the University of St. Louis, started working in endocrinology at the University of Texas Health Science Center Medical School in Houston and nearby Hermann Hospital, then cared for people with diabetes at Kaiser in San Diego for 10 years where he also taught classes in advanced diabetes self-management. With AMCR since 1994, he provides clinical care and is a sub-investigator on numerous diabetes research studies regarding new devices and drugs.

A well-known diabetes writer, John is co-author of Pumping Insulin (now in its 4th edition), Using Insulin, STOP the Rollercoaster and The Pocket Pancreas. He has given hundreds of presentations to health care providers and people with diabetes throughout the US and Canada, and consults for and has worked on medical advisory boards for numerous US and foreign medical device companies.

John provides a wealth of experience in diabetes, insulin pumps, and CGMs, having worn every pump and CGM available in the US. Drawing on a research background in lipids and dermatology, he investigates the biochemical origins for health problems and applies the best solutions for their treatment. John says managing his own diabetes helps him help others achieve stable glucose levels within their desired lifestyle.
